I am trying to delete several emails at once - when trying to do this, it opens up an email.   How can I delete about 10 emails at one time instead of individually?

Check the little box to the left of a message you want to delete, then hold down the Alt key and check another and another.  Then hit the Delete button.  If all 10 are in a continuous list, check the first one, then hold down the Shift key and check the last one.  Hit Delete.
