Microsoft has a free update patch that allows you to open .docx. Go to their website.

If you are using a Mac, Pages will open it.

Do you have a version of MS Word?  If not, you can download and install Open Office; it will open Word files.  Or you can also download and install LibreOffice.  Both are free and comparable to Ms Word.

Just a note that LibreOffice is actively being updated and supported. It is based on Open Office, which is more or less dead right now and has little development going on.
