Timeout error in Apple Mail

I am constantly getting this error in my Comcast IMAP accounts with Apple Mail on my iMac:

 

The connection to the server “imap.comcast.net” on port 143 timed out.

 

If I close and reopen mail everything is fine, unless I leave the program open for a while. I have four accounts and one by one I get this message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes the server isn't handshaking well or there's traffic somewhere. Don't re-enter your password. Just wait a while to try again.

 

How frequently are you checking email?

 

The more frequently you check, the more misses you'll have. I have mine set to every 15 minutes. I realize that is too infrequent for many people. If you are doing every minute, sometimes you will get hiccups. Maybe try every 5 minutes.

 

If you are expecting an incoming message, you can tap Get Mail to fetch it right then.

 

The preferred IMAP incoming mail port is 993 with SSL on. You might try switching to that.

I will try switching the port number. I did have SSL on. I never got asked for a password, just got the error. It seems Comcast switched to IMAP when you create a new account where before it defaulted to a POP account. I never got these messages when it was a POP account.

Changed the port  to 993 and upped the check mail time to every 15 minutes, but the problem is still persisting.
