Port 465 (SSL) or port 587 (TLS) for outgoing server

Port 465 (SSL) or port 587 (TLS) for outgoing server

I just installed MS Outlook 2010 on a new computer.  I established an IMAP Outlook account for my Comcast account.  Using the Outlook wizard, I allowed Comcast and Outlook to establish my new IMAP account automatically rather than doing it manually.  For the outgoing (SMTP) server the automated process gave me port 465 using SSL encryption.  Earlier on another computer, I established an IMAP Outlook account.  (I've forgotten whether I did it manually or let the wizard do it for me)  The earlier time I arrived at port 587 with TLS encryption.  I've read that TLS is newer and better than SSL.  Moreover, https://customer.xfinity.com/help-and-support/internet/email-client-programs-with-xfinity-email/ says to use port 587 -- and use port 465 "only if needed" (whatever that means).  Other Comcast websites recommend port 587 with TLS encryption as well.

Why did the wizard give me port 465 with SSL?  Should I change to port 587 with TLS?  If I change, will the change cause me grief?

Thank you.

Suggestion--------try with the default 465/SSL combination and see if it works OK for you.  If not, try the TLS and 587 combo.  Outlook can be a bit flaky from one iteration to another.

Re: Port 465 (SSL) or port 587 (TLS) for outgoing server

The wizard gave me the 465/SSL combo and everything seems to work fine, BUT please reread my note.  The Comcast website (see URL above) says that port 465 should be used "only if needed," whatever that means.  Moreover, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Layer_Security (among other sources) says that TLS replaced (or is replacing) SSL.  Consequently, 587/TLS seems the better choice.  Is there a downside to switching?  Will there be any adverse consequences of switching ... after the race has begun?
