Inbox emails spontaneously deleted

Every six weeks or so, my email account spontaneously deletes the oldest dozen or so emails in my inbox.  I have gone to the email preferences section and set the deletion schedule to 'never', but it still seems to happen (e.g., about 10 minutes ago).  Help!

Do you have the account enabled on a smartphone or tablet that might be downloading them and then deleting them from the server?  If it's set up using POP3, that could account for the missing messages.  The settings on the device will override the Comcast settings.
