How to block junk emails

how can I block emails that I don't want? Marking them as "spam" doesn't seem to work

Marking them as spam is about all you can do.  It takes time to help "train" the filters as to what you consider to be junk mail.  It is based on lists of known spam sources and user input.    You should find these of interest----------------------
