Cannot access Apple email

Cannot access Apple email

I got a message from Norton saying it would expire at the end of October.  The newer version could not be downloaded because my iMac was 10.6.8.  So, I downloaded El Capitan and then the newer version of Norton.  Since then I cannot access my Apple email.  The screen is frozen and says:

"Mail Upgrade    Preparing your Mail database"   There is a static blue line 1/6th of the way across the bar, but it does not move.  I contacted Norton to see if something happened on their end.  They did a remote connection and said everything was fine and I should contact my service provider.  HELP!  How do I get my Apple email working again?  Thanks! I even tried to update El Capitan, but it wouldn't allow it.  It said "Some updates could not be installed because mail did not quit.  Quit mail and try again."  That does not work either.

Just a thought------are you running Time Machine on a back-up drive?  If so, you could try to restore Mail to what it was just before you updated to El Capitan.  Worth a try anyway.  I have a Mac but I haven't made the leap yet.  I'm still running Yosemite.

No, I do not use Time Machine.  For some odd reason my Apple email is now working!  Hallelujah!  Thanks for your input.
