Can't select individual email messages

Can't select individual email messages

All of a sudden I cannot select individual email messages.  Clicking the Select box by a message opens the message, so I cannot select several on my inbox page to delete with 1 click.  The Select All button does select all.  I normally get lots of ads and having to delete them by opening them one at a time is tedious.  Both Chrome & Firefox are doing this.  What can I do to get the Select individual message function working again?  Did I unknowingly change its function?
