Can POP3 and IMAP be used at the same time?

I have a desktop running Win 7 Pro and Office 2007.  I use Oulook 2007 to retrieve my email using the POP3 server. Recently I acquired a Win 8.1 laptop. Windows Mail is not compatible with POP3 and wants me to use IMAP.  Can I use the IMAP server settings for the laptop and continue to use the POP3 and the desktop, or do I have to use IMAP on both?
