Normally you can plug the phone into the back of the modem/gateway.  You can also plug the modem/gateway into an unused jack in your home and depending on how the phone outlets are wired this may or may not "back feed" the entire home.  You must also ensure that the previous phone provider's line is disconnected in the DMARC box outside your home as this introduces voltage on your line which can disrupt VOIP service.
