How long of a service life should the battery have in the modem. I'm not talking about a prolonged electrical outage. I speaking of the need to replave after a certain life span. Has anyone ever had to have theirs replaced just from normal use. Thank you.

Arris or Comcast doesn't spec the replacement cycle for the battery, only whe the battery LED starts to flash is when it needs replacing.  Comcast can also see that battery failing and sometimes notifies the subscriber when the battery needs replacing. 

 

If the battery is shot, a calling Comcast support will send you a new one.

Thanks,,,I'm just trying to instruct my wife about how some of this works. Oh I forgot to ask,,,are these rechargable batterys they use.

Yes they are typical rechargeable batteries, when the power comes back they charge up again.
