Just had Internet and Voice installed today and Technician told my wife NOT to cancel old phone as that would cause us to have to change our home #. Is this for a certain time frame? Does Comcast automatically cancel phone to port the old #? Surely I do not have to pay 2 bills to keep my #

Once the "porting" request to your old service provider has been completed and Comcast can assign the number to your new service, your old provider's service will be cancelled by the old provider.   This is exactly how my conversion from AT&T to Comcast VOIP was done and it was flawless.
