No it's not. You need an eMTA / telephony modem.
Are you looking to purchase one of your own ?
O/k there *may* be one caveat with that. The first thing you should do is to call in or go to your local CC service center (the better choice) and inquire / confirm as to whether or not customer owned eMTA's (modems with phone support) are allowed to be used on the local system. Some local franchises still do not allow it and require you to rent one from CC.
The personnel that work there seem to better know what the actual local franchise's policies really are than do support reps at the national 800 number.
If allowed, here is a very good current tech eMTA;
Be sure to purchase brand new out of the box modems only !!
Here is a phone number for activating customer owned eMTA's;
We are allowed in my area to own our own modems/routers. I just didn't have time to get one before installation, but don't want to go too long before I purchase one.
That is quite a pricy one. Are there others that are less than $100?
That's around the going rate for this latest tech device. You may be able to find a bit better deal but don't buy a second hand one. Good luck ! :-)
Google if you like.
Surely there are other emta modems that aren't quite so much?
No, a few years ago they were going for $150, but the short supply has brought the price up.
Is there a reason I wouldn't want an Arris TM602G telephony modem? I found a list of Comcast's approved modems, and this one was on the list, but is about 1/5 the price of the one and only one you suggested.
It's only DOCSIS 2.0 capable and will soon be put on their "End Of Life" list..
You can Google DOCSIS 2 versus DOCSIS 3 for info. They are looking to eventually get all DOCSIS 2 devices off of their system to make room for the future. One day it would no longer function on the system but who knows when. Are you willing to roll the dice ?
