This has happened several times.  You dial a number in your own area code (313) and it connects and

then you dial a number in a different area code (734) and you get an operator telling you that

"you cannot be connected as dialed" and 800 numbers cannot be connected.  Should I get a

new phone? (vtech)

Ususally Touch Tone errors are due to the phone failing, so you might want to try a new phone, or at least a cheap $5 wired phone from Wal-Mart to test it out with.

Are you dialing the 1 before the area code when you are calling the Remote Area?

Yes, I am.  I have the phone numbers programmed into the phone and most of the time have had no problems.  Lately though, it happens more and more.
