Scamming call

We were warned by  our neighbor and very close friend that he received an email (referencing his daughter by name) that he needed to call an '809' number to respond to a very important message.  The call will result in a drastic bit of information, to hold you on the line, such as terminal illness, death in the family or even that someone in the family has been arrested and needs your help.

Our neighbor was shrewd enough to not call the number.  He contacted his phone provider (is AT&T) and was told this is a big scam originating in the Domincan Republic.  Calling this number will result in a bill that could be in the hundreds and thousands of dollars.  The billing will be $2425 per minute minimum according to AT&T.

My concern is this possibe with our phone service from Comcast?

AT&T advised not to use 809, 284, 876 as well 809 within the US and Canada for the same reason.

Re: Scamming call

I doubt it'll be that much per minute, but still, best not to call it and let voicemail (not an answering machine) pick up.

Thank you for your comment.  So much bad information is sent around the internet, it's nearly impossible to confirm the source.

The daughter must have won the Nigerian lottery.
