Dumb new user question

Honestly, I signed up for voice service because it dropped my bill significantly for six months and I was told I could just cancel after six months.

 

I have the Tel1 port activated on my modem now... what do you folks use this phone for? I hesitate to go out and spend even $10 on a phone that I may never use. (And then ~$35 on a new battery...)

It provides standard phone service through VOIP (Voice over IP).  With a standard telephone connected to the Tel 1 jack on the back of the modem you should have regular phone service with the number you were assigned.

With telephone service you were also assigned a PIN which is used to protect you telephone privacy.  Certain call to Comcast will requie you to provide this PIN to verify your account, especially accessing your account information.  If you do not remember your PIN, Comcast is required to call you back on you "assigned" telephone number in order to verify you.  If you do not connect a phone, they will be unable to help you.
