Clicking sounds when Dialing

Clicking sounds when Dialing

Is it normal to hear clicks while dialing?

The best way I can describe it is like, imagine you're dialing a touch-tone phone, but that phone is hooked up to a rotary phone. So when you hit '9' you hear 9 clicks, whereas if you hit '2' you'll only hear 2 clicks...

Am I missing something, or is this not normal?

Your telephone is set to pulse instead of touch tone.

Look for a button or switch that shows  pulse / tone or tt/dp and slide it to tone.  On some desk phones it will be a slide switch on the side of the phone.  Some advanced phones have the setting in the menu.

Oh, wow. Yea that did it. But now I have a new problem; now it doesn't work... Is there a reason why pulse works and tone doesn't?

Re: Clicking sounds when Dialing

Very old phones need the proper polarity of the phone line for the touch tones to work.  Most newer electronic phones do not matter on the polarity, so I'd say the phone is failing of the tones will not generate or are off frequency.

Try another phone to test it.
