All of sudden, phones only works when plugged directly into modem

Hi...

This afternoon I noticed that the modem was showing our phone line in use, when infact it wasn't.  We have one phone with 2 handsets.  I picked up the phone, and had no dial tone.  I checked the other phone and it wasn't off the hook.

So I then power cycled the modem and that did nothing.

I then plugged the phone right into the back of the modem and it worked.  Then ran the phone cord back into the wall from the modem and boom...modem says the line is in use again.

Why would this just start happening, and is it a problem with the modem, or something in the wiring...which has worked fine for years even before we had CDV.

Thanks

This sounds like there is a short circuit in the house wiring.  It may have worked fine for years, but it's broke now...  Smiley Wink

You might have a mouse loose in the house (and he chewed the wiring).
