56K modems not connecting

56K modems not connecting

Okay, my desktop computers' 56k modems can make outgoing calls but once placed, I can not speak or make numeric inputs.  Is this a comcast, voice, anomaly?

Re: 56K modems not connecting

Are you saying that you want to make a connection with your modem, you successfully connect, and then also want to place a voice call?

Can you hear the incoming Voice?  If so then the phone line is working and allowing the dialup to function.  At that point it would seem to be a softwre issue with your computer hardwar/software blocking the interaction.

Is your Microphone Muted?  Is the Microphone Volume turned down?

Re: 56K modems not connecting

Good advice but none of the above applies. I've trouble shot the problem extensively and it affects all my computers. I called comcast support and they confirmed that their voice service does not support 56k modem voice traffic at this time. So, I can fax but not complete a call through my computer's voice modem; not at this time.

Re: 56K modems not connecting

If you have a broadband connection, why would you ever want to use a 56K modem? Did you purchase CDV without Internet service? Or are you trying to connect to a service that isn't on the Internet?

I think other VOIP services have a similar limitation. I recall Vonage customers in the ReplayTV forum at AVS Forum saying they had to reduce the modem speed to 9600 bps to be able to download guide data.

Re: 56K modems not connecting

I think the OP wants to use the 56K modem to dial his outgoing telephone calls and use his his Mic and Speakers to talk to the folks on the other end and use his computer keypad to work his way  through the voice mail menu options
