thunderbird email hangs every morning for two minutes

For the past week, for first time in eight years using comcast via thunderbird client, there's a problem. Every morning when we wake our Macbook Airs to send emails, it takes close to two minutes for the first email to process. After that, email works fine until the next morning. And some incoming emails don't load until the first outgoing one processes.

 

Haven't changed server settings or upgraded operating system. Did upgrade to latest Thunderbird (38.0.1) after problem but didn't help. Comcast service rep first said there was a issue being resolved on its end. Now reps say its a Thunderbird problem (on two separate Macs).

 

Any suggestions. Many thanks in advance.

As a test, try setting the account up in Mac Mail and see if the same thing happens.  If it works normally then you will have at least narrowed the issue down to T-Bird.  Also, does the webmail work OK?

Webmail works OK.

Will try Mac Mail test tomorrow morning.

Thunderbird did hang this morning.

Mac Mail didn't hang.

But delivery of MM email to comcast.net address took close to two minutes.

Will try additional test tomorrow morning.

Thunderbird hangs frequently now, both Macs.

Mac Mail doesn't.

Prefer Thunderbird.

Any suggestions please?

The only thing I can think of is to delete the account from thunderbird and then re-create it.  Or-----delete Thunderbird from your computer and try a fresh install.

 

On a side note------------I have Thunderbird running on my iMac, but I keep it mostly for testing and as a back up to Mac Mail.  One reason I do this is that Mac Mail is integrated with OS X, and I use Time Machine along with an external hard drive to back up my system and files etc.  Mail is integrated with TM so that if I were to have a system crash, I can easily recover things including emails using the back up drive and TM.  Recovering emails using Thunderbird gets a little more complicated because your Mac stores the emails differently.

Advice much appreciated. If I delete account, or delete TB, then recreate or reinstall, assume old emails/folders for account (s) still exist (Library somewhere). Correct?

 

Side note: I too backup on external via TM. Assumed TB files wouldnt be hard to recover.

Also backup with Super Duper.

 

Side note: Mac Mail is OK with one big exception that I have yet to find a workaround:

unlike TB, you can't insert images, tables, text saved, say, on your desktop. All I can find

is insert photos from iPhoto/Photos. Don't want to take the time to import files via iPhoto.

If you have the account set up in TB using IMAP you shouldn't lose anything.  But just to be on the safe side, download another copy of TB and leave the old one intact.  Then go ahead and set up the account in the new one and run it in paralell until you are satisfied that all is well.  Then if you want you can delete the old one.

 

I'm out of state right now so I can't do any testing with the Mac.  But IIRC you can drag and drop files or photos from your desktop into an email in Mac Mail.

Much appreciated.

When troubleshooting TB, tried to change from POP3 to IMAP to see result.

Wouldn't let me. I could change via dialog box but the DONE button was whited out.

This may be the problem; Comcasts wants or is looking for IMAP.

A new account/install of TB might allow me to choose IMAP.
