mailer-daemon error message : retry time out exceeded

mailer-daemon error message : retry time out exceeded

Periodically I get emails that show a permanent failure to deliver that is titled "mailer-daemon" with the sub heading retry timeout exceeded, this is a permanent failure.  There is a alot of coding I cannot decipher but I can see who the email is from.   There is no rhyme nor reason as sometimes the emails come through, other times they don't.  I have cleaned out all the mailboxes so it isn't as if the mailbox is full.   I have lengthened the time of the server timeout from 1 minute to 4 as well.  But I still receive these messages.  Can anyone help?  It would be much appreciated.
