Does email in my sent box get automatically emptied after a certain time period or do I have to periodically manually empty it?

If you are still in the old email format, you can set a period of days after which the emails will be deleted.  From the Inbox page go to Preferences>>>>>>Email>>>>>Email Deletion Schedule.  There you will see your options.  If you are on the new format, there are no schedules you can change.  The Sent, Drafts and Inbox folders will hold messages indefinitely until you delete them.  Spam is kept for up to 30 days, and Trash for 7 days.
