emails freeze while loading, takes several minutes before they download.

I read emails from my smartphone, and delete them. If I log into my computer emails, they freeze while loading, so it takes several minutes for them to download, so I can just delete them again, since I've already seen them from my smartphone. 1) is there a setting somewhere that I can change so that if I've already seen a new email and delete it, it will no longer try to load onto my computer 2) What is causing the emails to freeze when they try to open on my computer? I use Thunderbird to access my comcast emails.
