What happened  to my read but NOT deleted emails in my message box? All of a sudden they are gone (to where?)

Do you have the account enabled in a desktop email client like Thunderbird or Outlook, or on a mobile device?  If so, is it set up using POP3?  That being the case, it may be downloading the messages and then deleting them from the server, which is the default for POP3.

Thank you for your reply. The problem only occurred in my xfinity account on my laptop. The read but not deleted messages are still available on my iPhone. So I’m not pursuing this mystery any further.
