SamKnows White Box

We just received an e-mail that appears to be from Xfinity Internet asking us to volunteer for a boradband study and install a SamKnows White Box.  Is this legitimate?

Hi joebingo,

Yes, this is a legitimate message from Comcast.  The email is part of a recruiting campaign to enlist consumers into the FCC’s “Measuring Broadband America Program”.  The FCC has collaborated with SamKnows with the goal of accurately measuring fixed broadband and openly sharing this information to the public in a effort to improve broadband in America.

You can read more about this program here:  https://www.fcc.gov/measuring-broadband-america

Re: SamKnows White Box

ComcastHal,

How would regular testing of broadband speed affect a subscribers data usage? I took a look through the documentation, but apart from decribing what tests are performed, it doesn't seem to detail how often they are done or how much data is transferred.

Re: SamKnows White Box

Generally, data usage will depend on your speed.  There are FAQs that help answer this along with other common questions around broadband measurements:

https://www.measuringbroadbandamerica.com/fixed-broadband/fixed-broadband-faqs/

You can refer to the FAQ "What effect will this project have on my monthly download cap?"

Alternatively, the following page provides additional information around testing schedule as well as the estimated usage of each test:

Re: SamKnows White Box

It's legit. Documenation states it runs tests every 5 min when the network is idle and comsumes 20GB of data. The router comes from the UK via FedEx. It also collects wifi signals passively. I confirmed this with the FCC. I'm a tester.
