Email Address Compromised

Email Address Compromised

I believe my Email Address has been compromised. I keep getting tons of "splashback" emails and also good customers keep notifying me that we have been "hacked" as they keep saying. I do not believe that it is our actual account that has been compromised, but only the email address. What are my options to correct this?

Thank you

Re: Email Address Compromised

There's a couple of things that could be going on here. First, look in your Sent folder. Do you see anything in there you know you didn't send out yourself? If so, then yes, your account has likely been compromised. In that case, change your password to something stronger than whatever it is right now. Also change the secret question and answer for the account. Then run a complete scan of your machine with your A/V software to see if it finds anything wrong.

If the Sent folder looks OK, the other likely scenario is that your email address is being "spoofed". Spammers can make it appear as though emails come from you when in fact they did not. If that is the case, then there is nothing to do but wait it out. Spammers will usually use an address for a few days or a week and then move on ot annoy someone else.

In either case I would change the password and security question right away. Most of the time that will stop the problem if the account has been hacked.

Re: Email Address Compromised

Yeah, nothing ever shows up in the sent folder. A/V never finds anything in a scan. I do believe we are being "spoofed". The "splashback" emails seem to only occur on the weekends now. It has been going on for off and on about a month now. It is happening less and less though. So hopefully they will leave us alone soon.

Keep in mind that if it ever gets really bad and won't go away you have the nuclear option----------------you can just change your Comcast email address.  Something for you to file away if it ever comes to that.

Re: Email Address Compromised

Ha-Ha yeah, we are toying with the idea of the "nuclear option". We use this email account for a small business so it is important to 1 not look like fools and 2 not be sending our customers "spam". We would have to send out a ton on new contatct info.
