Comcast blocking my personal website

Comcast blocking my personal website

Hi there,

I'm beyond exasperated with Xfininty's "customer service" over the phone so I'm hoping someone on this board can help.

Here's my problem in a nutshell, Comcast is blocking me from acessing my personal website and 2 other portals that use a similar URL. When I type in the URLs (mywebsitesname.co, billing.mywebsitesname.co/admin/users/login, and mywebsitesname.co/wp-admin) all I see is a loading icon for about one minute and then an error message that the session has timed out. This happens in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. I deleted my cache, browser history, and cookies in each browser but nothing changes. Strangely, I can access the sites using my cell provider (TMobile). Additionally, other people who are not connected to my wifi can view the sites so the problem is targeted around my network.

Here's what I've done so far...

  • Contacted BlueHost (my web host) and everything is fine from their end. The site doesn't have any errors and they can view all three sites just fine.
  • Contacted Pancake (the billing app that is connected to my site) and everything looks good on their end as well.
  • Contacted Comcast and spent about 2.5 hours on the phone with a rep (including being transferred to the wrong department TWICE and spending an hour on hold to find that out) who went through countless tests and her suggestion in the end was to a) set up a secure socket layer on my website and if that didn't work b) to upgrade to their commercial internet service.
  • I set up an SSL on my site, waited over 24 hours but, alas, I still can't access my site.

So, at this point, it seems like Comcast is basically holding my site ransom so that I upgrade to a commercial internet. There's no way I'm upgrading. My site is basically just a portfolio of my design work. There's no e-commerce of any kind.

Has this happened to anyone else out there? If so, were you able to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Comcast blocking my personal website

What does a trace to the site show? In Windows, open a Command Prompt window, enter

    tracert sitename

and post the output.

Re: Comcast blocking my personal website

Thanks for getting back to me Bruce.

Here's what I got...

Tracing route to sitename.co [66.147.242.194] over a maximum of 30 hops and then the adjoining attachment. For the other URLs I got the message "unable to resolve target system name"

Any thoughts?

You can't specify anything beyond the top level domain with "tracert". The utility isn't very smart will treat the whole thing is a domain name. For example, "tracert my.xfinity.com" succeeds, but "tracert my.xfinity.com/coupon" produces an "Unable to resolve target system name" error, even though that's a valid page address.

I'm not sure how to interpret your trace. It doesn't look like a Comcast IP block. Since you didn't post the hostname I couldn't check it in a browser, but browsing http://66.147.242.194/ displays a page that says:

There is no website configured at this address.

which is typical when you try to browse a webhost by IP address instead of using the hostname.

My trace to the IP you posted looks like:

C>tracert -4 66.147.242.194

Re: Comcast blocking my personal website

FWIW, they used sitename.co instead of .com

Re: Comcast blocking my personal website

Thanks again for your help. My site name is peternelsondesign.co

I entered: "tracert peternelsondesign.co" in the utility and received the messages I wrote earlier.

Does this added info help any?

Re: Comcast blocking my personal website

I can reach the site:

          PND1.png

When one customer can reach a site but another cannot, it usually means the site is blocking that customer's public Comcast IP. You might try asking the site's admins for help with this once again. Hosting companies often tell you they are not blocking you when they in fact are. The systems that block IPs are typically automatic, and unknown to most of the host's staff.

You can look up your IP at "https://www.google.com/search?q=IP".
