Vanishing emails

I'm having a strange email problem.  After I've opened a new message and go back to my Inbox, the most recent messages 'disappear' from the list.  I can make them reappar by clicking onto another mail folder (e.g. the Sent folder) and then back to the Inbox, but each time I open another message and go back to the list, the recent emails have vanished again. Can anyone suggest how to fix it?

You must close and reopen or REFRESH (Ctrl R) the Inbox page, otherwise you are viewing that page in the last condition it existed at. That is how non-refreshing web pages work.  Your other option is to use a real email client instead of a web page to access your email account.
