WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - shutting down 11/27/17

On October 25, 2017 (edit: updated to November 24; now November 27), WYCC in Chicago (usually 240/1020 HD, various channels for SD) will be going off the air. They sold their broadcast spectrum in the FCC 600MHz auction and decided to shut down, although WTTW, the main PBS station, is offering to share a channel.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-wycc-tv-channel-sharing-20170922-story.html

If they do become a WTTW subchannel, it may be awhile before it returns to Comcast, if ever. (edit: it looks like it will not move to WTTW, but MHZ Worldview may become a 5th channel [which may take awhile to be available on Comcast], and they have picked up two shows to air on WTTW Prime: http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-wycc-drops-pbs-wttw-deal-20171102-story.html)

In addition to the main channel (240/1020 for  HD, various for SD), this will also mean the loss of MHz WorldView (372/1178) and FNX (373/1177).

(Edit 11/3/17: Updated title to shorten it to be fully visible on thread page and other updates.)

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - ceasing operations 11/27/17

It appears to now be official that WYCC will fully shut down on November 27. They have already dropped PBS programming from their main channel and are duplicating MHz WorldView for now. In addition to the main channel (240/1020 for  HD, various for SD), this will also mean the loss of MHz WorldView (372/1178) and FNX (373/1177).

FAQS for viewers after switchover to WorldView MHz

  • The licensee of WYCC-TV is the Board of Trustees for City Colleges of Chicago. The station was entered into the FCC spectrum auction last spring and the bid was accepted.

  • As a result of this station’s participation in the FCC incentive auction for broadcast spectrum sale, pursuant to federal regulations, WYCC will cease all broadcast operations on channels 20.1, 20.2 and 20.3 on November 27, 2017.

  • WYCC is no longer affiliated with PBS or other content providers whose programs previously aired on WYCC. As a result, WYCC is only able to provide WorldView Megahertz programming for the time being on 20.1. The content on 20.2 and 20.3 will not change during this period.

  • We encourage you to tune to WTTW and visit wttw.com for more information on the programs you enjoy.

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - ceasing operations on 11/24/17

WYCC has announced a change to the shutdown date. It is now scheduled for November 24 while they see if they can work out a channel sharing agreement with WTTW.

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - ceasing operations 11/24/17

The date was moved up to Oct 25 according to Robert Feder, and the new listings are already up on Zap2It. The old WYCC went off the air at midnight.

Looks like the new owner is "MHz Networks", seems to be mostly European content including various world news programs with some China and India news as well, and some drama and mystery series, looks like "modern, edgy" instead of "quaint English country or seaside village" - sorry, but I prefer quaint British accents over edgy with subtitles. And it looks like the most recent and hottest series can only be accessed through their For-Pay MHz Choice service, including what looks like the original version of Wallander.

Better learn how to turn on your Closed Captioning if you don't already know how.

I'm REALLY going to miss WYCC, especially the local content programs and the holiday weekend Mystery Marathons. And they'd just started rerunning some of the older Midsomer Murders stories with John Nettles - SO disappointing that those are now apparently unavailable anywhere in the Chicago viewing area unless you subscribe to Acorn.tv or maybe 1 or 2 other streaming services.

It's a darned shame they couldn't have kept it together by working out some kind of time-share with WTTW.

MHz Worldview is the 20.3 broadcast channel (Comcast 372). Looks like they copied it to the main channel for now. FNX is still on 20.2 (Comcast 373).

Thanks, Andyross.

It looks like they were hoping for some kind of help from WTTW. Their original Facebook post dated Oct 25, 11:40AM also included:

"...

The Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet November 2 at which time a final decision is expected on the status of WYCC.

WYCC is no longer affiliated with PBS or other content providers whose programs previously aired on WYCC. As a result, WYCC is only able to provide WorldView Megahertz programming for the time being on 20.1. The content on 20.2 and 20.3 will not change during this period.

If the channel sharing agreement is approved by the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees in November, at some point later this year, WTTW will assume full operational control with WYCC and its programming..."

https://www.facebook.com/WYCCPBSChicago/posts/1478863288828080

Two days later they posted an update that deleted the references to a possible channel-sharing agreement with WTTW, see the Oct27, 9:58AM follow-up post.

While I'm very glad that Comcast carries both WTTW Prime and WTTW World/Create, I'm really going to miss the unique programming from WYCC, especially the Brit-centric programming. PBS in Washington DC has an entire channel WETA-UK that has a solid lineup of British programming,

https://weta.org/tv/uk/programsatoz

and the main WETA channel is even showing the UK version of Antiques Roadshow. I wish WTTW or better yet, PBS, would do the same.

Finally an actual comment in the media, although it still doesn't explain exactly what's happening.

WYCC drops PBS, weighs channel-sharing deal with WTTW

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-wycc-drops-pbs-wttw-deal-20171102-story.html

" ... Under the proposed channel-sharing arrangement, the MHz Worldview network would migrate to WTTW as a fifth channel, under the WYCC brand, sources familiar with negotiations said..."

And that's supposed to be an improvement? Or at least comparable to what we had?

"...Elynne Chaplik-Aleskow, 72, founding general manager of WYCC, who ran the station from its inception in 1983 through 1994, said WYCC would be better off going dark..."

I agree. If they can't replace something good with something else at least as good, then why bother?

WYCC, we hardly knew ya'. Smiley Sad

Just a note that I have been trying to keep the first post in this thread updated with all the changes and latest news.

My xfinity GUIDE does not show any worldview (especially MHZ mysteries) after 6 AM on 11/25. This is on channels 20,240, 372.

I know about WYCC and it's shutdown (which as of my writing is to be 11/27 I'm just looking to find an xfinity channel after that date that carries MHZ mysteries and Worldview. Thanx

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - shutting down 11/27/17

Currently, they will disappear. WTTW may pick it up based on some reports, but it may be awhile before Comcast passes it on if it happens.

They do have a streaming service called MHz Choice, but it's $7.99/month after the first free month.

Can't xfinity simply carry Worldview for chicago area comcast subscribers by picking up a worldview from a different comcast city?

No. There are restransmission rights. Getting MHz Worldview from another city would probably not be legal as that station only has the rights for their area, plus federal laws involving Designated Market Area for the broadcast station itself.

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - shutting down 11/27/17

seems convoluted but worldview is over broadcast channel, not cable. Our xfinity has PBS 10 out of Gary (right next to chicago).

They don't carry Worldview tho.

disappointing as perhaps one of our most used xfinity shows (MHZ mysteries.)
Thanx

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - shutting down 11/27/17

one of the only reasons I have not cut the cord with comcast is because of MHZ channel. Comcast discontinued SPIKE tv now MHZ tv. Tome to consider dish or straming. Rod Johnson comcast customer

Re: WYCC (PBS) Chicago, IL - shutting down 11/27/17

Comcast didn't discontinue Spike, it is sitll there. It did move from Starter to Preferred a few years ago. It is now moving to Sports&Entertainment due to a name change (Paramount Network) and presumably a change in programming, which is not Comcast-related.

I love the funky title card Comcast has put up on the WYCC channels:
