I have a new PC (Dell XPS 8300) that I am trying to connect to my 6 year old cable modem, but it won't connect. The modem is a Motorola SB5100. I have tried several times using the online instructions from Comcast and Motorola, without success. Right now I am using the old PC and the old modem with no problem. Any suggestions?

A direct connection to the modem or is there a router? Did you powercycle the modem?

Direct connection between modem and PC. Did not power cycle modem because it continues to work fine with old PC - I am on that connection now. Old PC has Windows XP and new has Windows 7. Comcast instructions say to set properties for TCP/IP version 4 on networking tab but old modem may not work with V4?

You need to properly powercycle the modem for it to recognize the new machine.

I powercycled the modem and now have internet access. I am on the new PC right now. Thanks for the info. When all else fails, hit the beast between the eyes with a 2x4, also known as pulling the plug.
