Windows 10 start menu/Cortana broken after Norton install

I had been trying to troubleshoot the start menu/Cortana issue and finally decided to reinstall Windows.  Both were working fine up until I restarted to finish the Norton installation.  Has anyone else noticed the correlation?

Thanks.

Quickly researched your issue. It's not unheard of but I found no clear miracle cures.

Here's what some have to say about Norton/Start Menu/Cortana (Dec 2016/Jan 2017): https://community.norton.com/en/forums/cortana-vs-norton-issues-almost-lost-faithe

Assuming you have a clean reinstallation of Win 10 with a working Start Menu/Cortana, ensure you have completely removed Norton and try a fresh reinstallation.

First, remove Norton from your PC:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click System on the Settings menu.
  4. Select Apps & features from the left pane.
  5. Select an app you wish to uninstall.
  6. Click the Uninstall button that appears.

Next, download and run the Norton Removal Tool to remove any residual files: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Try reinstalling Norton on your PC. Still have problems?

Don't give up. There are others on this forum willing to respond. Be patient.

I suspect you're trying to use Norton because it's freely offered by Comcast. There are many opinions on this. I won't have it on my machine.

You can abandon Norton and try another free AV application. Here's what others have to say about Best Free AV 2017:

Hi Mike20878,

If I may, just an off the wall suggestion.  Disable the WIN 10 Fast Start feature and see if they play nicely after the restart for Norton install.

Just my 2¢, but there is a new KB (for Comcast/ISP provided products) for the running of the new Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool in lieu of the Norton Removal Tool - as the instuctions for the NRT lead you to manage.norton.com. which is not associated with Comcast versions of Norton as they do not posess a Norton Account.

I also like to add the following for after the install:

Once installation is complete, open NSS and manually Run LiveUpdate (located on drop-down under Security on left side of main page of NSS) as many times as necessary for it to respond "no updates found". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no updates found" and then reboot one last time.  Your installation should now be up to date definition wise and ready for use.

Please let us know how things go.
